INTO THE WILD
This four day, three night advanced backpacking adventure is designed for intermediate to advanced youth backpackers.
On this backpacking adventure, participants will navigate the Sierra’s vast trail network, summit notable Tahoe peaks and explore its vast ecosystem. Underway campers will learn to orienteer by map and compass, how to route plan, how to identify native flora and fauna, and how to safely filter water. At camp, participants will learn the do’s and don’t of selecting a tent location, food storage, of running a camp kitchen and Leave No Trace practices to mitigate their impact on the local ecosystem.
This backcountry experience will hone each camper’s strength, confidence and perseverance. Values which will endure long after this adventure ends.
To ensure safety and best practices we utilize Tahoe Expedition Academy and Tahoe Summer Camps certified guides and best practices. A 6:1 camper to guide ratio is maintained at all times.
CAMP DETAILS
Experience Requirement – All campers on the Advanced Backpacking trip must meet the following requirements.
- Can hike 5+ miles per day with a full pack
- Participants must be able to swim
- Pack their own packs
- Some experience in the backcountry
- Have a great attitude!

Ages: Designed for 11 to 14 year old campers.
Trip Dates:
- Advanced Boys Trip – July 9 to July 12, 2024.
- Advanced Girls Trip – July 23 to July 26, 2024.
Time: Each trip runs from 8:00am Tuesday to ~3:00pm on Friday.
Where: Participants will meet at Tahoe Expedition Academy, located at 9765 Shaffer Mill Rd. Truckee, CA 96161. Specific backpacking location and route will be shared with participants prior to the trip.
Provided Gear: Tahoe Summer Camps has overnight backpacks, tents, group cooking supplies and necessities available, at no additional charge. Food is also included in camp registration. An individual packing list will be shared weeks prior to trips kicking off.
Trip Itinerary and Packing List: A detailed trip itinerary and packing list will be provided to registrants.
Campers Will Supply:
- Sleeping Bag
- Toiletries
- Medication (if needed)
- Clothing, shoes and bathing suit
- Headlamp
- Snacks
- 2 Water Bottles
